At least two people including a foreign doctor were injured when a UN convoy carrying UN and WHO officials came under attack by unknown gunmen in Pakistan's southern port city of Karachi, said local police.
Deputy Superintendant Police of the Sohrab Goth area in the city said that the attack took place at about 12:50 p.m. when two unknown gunmen coming in on a motorbike opened fire at a convoy carrying UN and WHO officials for a polio campaign in an Afghan refugee camp in a slum area of Karachi, Xinhua reported.
Two people inlcuding a foreign doctor named Fostan Davis and a local driver were injured in the attack, said the police officer, adding that the foreign doctor was sitting next to the driver in a Nissan pickup when they got attacked by the gunmen.
The doctor received bullet injury in his waist, said local media, adding that the doctor and the driver had been shifted to the Patel Hospital in the city. Hospital sources said that the injured doctor was in a stable condition.
Nationality of the injured doctor is not immediately known. The gunmen run away after the attack, said the police.
On Monday, Pakistan kicked off a three-day polio campaign across the country. Taliban had threatened to attack the people involved in the campaign before it was launched. Pakistan remains one of the three countries in the world, which are still suffering from this disease that has long been eradicated in other parts of the globe.
