Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney accused President Barack Obama on Tuesday of pursuing foreign policies that have led to declining US influence on the world stage, dpa reported.
"When it comes to national security and foreign policy, as with our economy, the last few years have been a time of declining influence and missed opportunity," Romney told a veterans convention in Reno, Nevada.
In a speech dubbed as a major foreign policy address, Romney said the ongoing threat from Iran as well as the faltering US economy showed that Obama had not succeeded.
"We haven't seen much in the president's first term that inspires confidence in a second," Romney said.
Obama spoke to the same gathering of the Veterans of Foreign Wars a day earlier, and pointed to promises he made as a candidate to end the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and to go after terrorist network al-Qaeda.
"Because we're leading around the world, people have a new attitude toward America. There's more confidence in our leadership," Obama said.
The Obama campaign earlier said Romney should go beyond generalities and offer specific policy proposals as he leaves this week for Britain, Israel and Poland.
