At least nine people were killed Sunday when an unmanned US aircraft targeted alleged hideouts of Islamist militants in Pakistan's north-western tribal region, officials said, DPA reported.

The pre-dawn strike took place in Babad Ghar area of Sarwakai, along the border of North and South Waziristan tribal districts.

An intelligence official told dpa that the drone had fired 10 missiles into three hideouts associated with suspected militants.

"We have reports that so far nine people were killed in the attack and some more injured. The hideouts were also damaged in the attack," he said.

Another intelligence official said local residents had pulled out charred bodies from the debris while some drones were still hovering in the sky.

"The identities of dead are not known yet," he said on condition of anonymity.

The area where the incident took place is assumed to be controlled by the group related to Maulvi Nazir, who was killed along with five of his fighters in a similar airstrike on Wednesday.
