Turkey arrests suspected coup plotter

Turkish police have arrested the suspected mastermind behind an alleged 2003 military coup plan to overthrow the government, Press TV reported.

Retired four-star general Cetin Dogan was among 196 people indicted on charges of conspiracy to launch the coup.

He was re-arrested two days after arrest warrants were issued for 102 suspects allegedly involved in the coup plot.

Dogan, who is accused of spearheading the plot, was escorted by plainclothes police from Istanbul airport as soon as he arrived on Sunday from the southwestern holiday resort of Bodrum, the police said.

The first hearing of the high-profile case is scheduled for December 16.

Dogan is accused of plotting a coup - codenamed "Operation Sledgehammer" - to overthrow the Justice and Development Party (AKP), which came to power in November 2002.

The suspects are charged with planning to bomb mosques and provoke tensions with neighboring Greece with the aim to spark political unrest and shape public opinion in favor of a military coup, before seizing power, AFP reported.

Dogan has denied the charges, arguing papers from a contingency plan based on a scenario of domestic unrest had been doctored to look like a coup plot.
