U.S., Turkey to discuss cooperation in combating terrorism

A delegation of the U.S. Department of Defense led by Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs Alexander Vershbow will arrive in Turkey to discuss cooperation in combating terrorism, CNN Turk television channel quotes the U.S. State Department Spokesperson Victoria Nuland as saying.

Nuland said the U.S. is always ready to help Turkey in combating terrorism and urged Ankara to cooperate with neighboring countries in this regard.

Turkey has recently launched an active fight against terrorism. The Turkish Air Force makes bombing raids over the positions of the Kurdish separatists in northern Iraq and in Turkey.

Air strikes were conducted after a militant terror attack in southeastern Turkey on Aug. 17, during which nine Turkish servicemen were killed.

In response to the attack of Kurdish militants in Hakkari province bordering with Iraq, which killed 24 Turkish servicemen and wounded 18 on the night of Oct.19, the Turkish army launched a major ground operation in five regions of Northern Iraq. The 10000th grouping, mainly for special purposes were involved in the operations.

The conflict between Turkey and the PKK, which has continued for more than 25 years, put an end to lives of over 40,000 people. PKK is recognized as terrorist organization by the UN and the EU.
