Latest figures have revealed that more than 300 Iranians die from heart problems, making cardiovascular diseases the leading cause of death in the country, PressTV reported.

"Some 110,000 Iranians die from cardiac problems each year," head of the cardiovascular department of Ministry of Health and Medical Education Tahereh Samavat said.

She stressed that the majority of heart attacks occur in individuals aged less than 50, adding that men are more likely than women to experience such events.

Smoking, sedentary lifestyles and adopting unhealthy diets are the main factors contributing to the high prevalence of heart disease in the country, she added.

Samavat urged officials particularly those involved in the food and agriculture industries to establish certain policies with the aim of improving the diet and subsequently lowering the risk of heart disease.
