Azerbaijan, Baku /corr. Trend K.Zarbaliyeva, D.Khatinoglu / Iran has strengthened its control on the border with Azerbaijan to prevent the transportation of drugs, IRNA reports.
According to the Governor of Iran's province of Ardabil, Ali Nikzade, the Government allocated $4mln for this purpose. Nikzade said that Ardabil had transformed into a transit zone for transporting narcotics. The Ardabil border with Azerbaijan runs 380 km in length and five of the province's nine cities are bordered with Azerbaijan.
According to the official information of the Azerbaijani Government, a large part of narcotics is brought in from Iran. Nearly 90% of the Iranian citizens arrested in Azerbaijan are accused of carrying illegal drugs
