U.S. embassy: Review of Bryza's candidacy still on hold

Azerbaijan, Baku, Sept.13 / Trend, M. Aliyev /

The U.S. Senate has not yet scheduled the date to review Matthew Bryza's candidacy as the next U.S. ambassador to Azerbaijan.

According to the U.S. Constitution, the Senate must approve ambassadorial candidates nominated by the president. Procedures are underway in this regard, U.S. Charge d'Affaires in Azerbaijan Adam Stirling told journalists today.

Earlier, the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee postponed the vote on Bryza's candidacy on Aug. 4 to an unspecified date in September. However, the committee chairman, John Kerry, announced that the vote has once again been postponed at a recent business meeting with a number of ambassadorial candidates. He added that Senator Barbara Boxer asked him to postpone the vote.

President Barack Obama nominated Bryza as the next U.S. ambassador to Azerbaijan in May.

According to Stirling, the issue is still on the agenda.
