Turkey intends to produce its first infantry rifle, the SAR 223, which is considered a future rival of the Kalashnikov, the Hürriyet newspaper reported on Tuesday.
About 20 percent of the project will be funded by the Ministry of Defence of Turkey. The project cost is estimated at 14 million lire. A new type of SAR 223 rifle will be equipped with a special butt, which can be shortened and elongated. It also comes with a laser pointer.
It is reported that Turkey plans to produce up to 2,000 of these rifles per month. The country is working on plans to export SAR 223 rifles.
In recent years, the Turkish military industry is focused on the development and manufacturing of its own products.
