Baku, Azerbaijan, Jan. 14
Since Azerbaijan gained independence, the relations between the country and the US have passed a successful way, and kept their significance despite some processes, Novruz Mammadov, deputy head of Azerbaijani presidential administration, chief of the administration's foreign relations department, told reporters Jan.14.
He made the remarks while speaking on the visit of Senior Director for European Affairs at the US National Security Council Charles Kupchan to Azerbaijan.
"It is natural, because these relations aren't built upon some random, transient interests," Mammadov said.
Mammadov went on to add that Azerbaijan is one of the countries that built a successful comprehensive cooperation with the West, namely the US and European countries.
"This cooperation has always been based on the interests of Azerbaijan," said Mammadov.
He said that the basis, fundamental principles of these relations were laid by Azerbaijan's National Leader Heydar Aliyev and are continued by the country's President Ilham Aliyev on the basis of strengthening and development of statehood and national interests of Azerbaijan.
Mammadov also said that problems can occur in any partnership, which develops on the basis of interests of a country, national and state interests.
Kupchan was earlier received by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
"The meeting was constructive in nature," Mammadov said. "It was based on mutual understanding and mutual interests. A wide range of issues was discussed. The views on the nature, essence and importance of Azerbaijan-US cooperation over the years were exchanged."
Mammadov said that Azerbaijan and the US have established very successful relations in the energy sphere, contributing to the implementation of major projects, adding that today these relations have reached a very high level.
He also stressed the successful bilateral and multilateral cooperation with Washington in fighting terrorism, reminding that Azerbaijan participated in missions in Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan.
"Azerbaijan has acted successfully and contributed to the NATO peacekeeping operations, that is, the US-led international coalition," he said. "Washington has also assisted in the sphere of economy, trade, energy diversification policy since the conclusion of the Contract of the Century up till now."
"All areas of Azerbaijan-US cooperation were widely analyzed and discussed during the meeting," he said. "Their significance, good prospects for their further development and the importance of their further expansion were stressed."
Mammadov said that such a meeting is a logical, natural process.
"I think that the actions were taken to reach mutual understanding on many issues during this meeting," he said. "And this is very important as they can prove themselves in the further cooperation. I am confident that they will."
