Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Disproves Azerbaijani Journalist’s Accusations

Azerbaijan, Baku / Тrend corr A. Ismayilova / Azerbaijani Foreign Minister, Elmar Mammadyarov, disproved accusations regarding him made by the editor-in-chef of Realny Azerbaijan and Gundalik Azerbaijan newspapers, Eynulla Fatullayev, on 5 October, who stated that he had been arrested due to the lawsuit commenced by the Minister, the Spokesman for the Foreign Minister, Khazar Ibrahim, said to Trend.

Mammadyarov did not recall a lawsuit against Fatullayev, Ibrahim said. According to him, that would be humiliating for the minister.

"Mammadyarov never considered Fatullayev to be a professional journalist and treated him like a representative of yellow press. Naturally, the Minister never reacted to his articles and especially did not initiate a lawsuit against him," the Spokesman said.

On 5 October, Fatullayev's attorney, Isakhan Ashurov, said at court that Mammadyarov applied to the Azerbaijan National Security Ministry stating that an article published by Fatullayev in his newspaper caused discontent of the representatives of Azerbaijani diplomatic missions abroad and caused harm to intergovernmental relations. The attorney petitioned to invite Mammadyarov to the court to testify.

Fatullayev is charged with contravening Article 214 (threat of terrorism) and 283.2.2 (inspiration of national, racial, social or religious hatred with abuse of power) of the Criminal Code.

On the basis of the lawsuit commenced by the head of the Chief of the Centre for Protection of Rights of Refugees and IDPs, Tatyana Chaladze Fatullayev was sentenced to two years and six months of imprisonment on 20 April.
