Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend / A total of 230 HIV carriers were revealed in Azerbaijan within the 9 months of 2007 (ВИЧ), Azerbaijani Health Ministry reported.
One of them is a foreigner and 229 are Azerbaijani citizens - 192 men (83.8%), 37 women (16.2%). The disease killed 48 people. Some 49.6% of the HIV carriers were infected when making drug injections.
Two of the HIV carriers (0.9%) were over 60 years old, 105 (45.7%) - between 30 and 39, 31 (13.5%) - between 25 and 29, 52 (22.6%) - between 40 and 49, 20 (8.7%) - between 19 and 24, 1 (0.4%) - between 15 and 18, 2 (0.9%) - up to 14. A total of 63 (27.5%) are Baku residents, 162 (70.3%) are the residents of other regions.
Since 1987 till 1 October 2007 the Azerbaijani AIDS Centre revealed 1,187 HIV carriers. It was ascertained that 656 (58%) of them were infected as a result of drug injecting, 258 (22.8%) - heterosexual relations, 12 (1.1%) - homosexual contacts, 10 (0.9%) were born by HIV carrier mothers, 1 (0.1%) - through tattooing, 1 (0.1 %) as a result of blood transfusion. But it was impossible to ascertain how 193 were infected.
