Most Azerbaijani Convicted Juveniles From Unfavorable Families

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. K.Zarbaliyeva / Imran Mammadov, the head of Reformatory of the Penitentiary Service of Azerbaijani Judicial Ministry, stated on 1 June that most of Azerbaijani juveniles who serve prison terms come from unfavourable families.

Presently, fifty juveniles are incarcerated in this prison in comparison to 2006, a 10% increase from last year.

Most juvenile prison terms are for sex crimes, willful homicide, and robbery.

Eight juveniles took part in the exams held in 2006 for entry into technical schools and six successfully passed. In the case that changes to Azerbaijani legislation are introduced, juveniles will have opportunity to study in the country's universities.

One juvenile was released as a result of the amnesty held by the reformatory.
