Number of economically active citizens in Azerbaijan increases

As of September 1, 2021, the economically active population in Azerbaijan increased by 1.1 percent, or by 56,000 people, compared to the same period of 2020 – from 5.24 million to 5.295 million people, Trend reports via State Statistics Committee.

The number of employed people amounted to 4.9 million people from January through August 2021, against 4.8 million over the same period of 2020.

The number of employees increased by 8,500 people over the year from 1.68 million to about 1.69 million people, of which 905,400 were involved in the public sector of the economy.

Some 784,300 people were involved in the non-state sector.

About 31,900 people were employed in the oil sector of the economy, compared to 34,100 people in 2020, and 1.658 million people were employed in the non-oil sector, compared to 1.647 million people in 2020.

About 23.8 percent of employees were involved in the production, including 7.4 percent in the processing industry, 7.6 percent in construction, 3.4 percent in agriculture, forestry, and fishing, 1.9 percent in mining, 1.9 percent in the water supply, waste treatment, and recycling sector, and 1.6 percent in the production, distribution, and supply of electricity, gas, and steam.

Of the total number of people working in the services sector, 19.2 were in the field of education, 18.6 percent – trade and repair of vehicles, 8.2 percent - health and social services.

Another 6.6 percent accounted for the sphere of public administration and defense, as well as social security, 5.2 percent – the provision of administrative and support services, 4.4 percent – transport and warehousing, 3.5 percent - scientific and technical activities.

Some 3.2 percent of employees were in the field of recreation and entertainment, 1.8 percent - in information and communications, 1.8 percent – in financial and insurance activities, 1.7 percent in the hotel business and catering. The remaining 1.1 percent accounted for the provision of services in other sectors, and 0.9 percent – for the real estate sector.

Azerbaijan's GDP from January through August 2021 increased by 3.6 percent compared to the same period of 2020 – from 46 billion ($27 billion) to 54.7 billion manat ($32.1 billion).
