In 11 months of the current Iranian year (started March 21, 2018), loading and unloading at the port of Astara in Iran’s northern Gilan Province has increased by 4 percent, compared to the same period last year, Kiyanoush Amiri, Acting Head of Astara Ports and Maritime Department, told IRNA, Trend reports.

According to Amiri, 168,700 tons of goods were loaded and unloaded in 11 months.

He added that 192 vessels exported 112,000 tons of goods and imported 54,900 tons.

Noting that the number of ships anchoring at the Astara port increased by about 5 percent in 11 months (compared to the same period last year), Amiri said that 1,240 tons of goods were transited via this port.

The main products transported at the port include various types of wood, medium-density fiberboard (MDF), calcium carbonate, cement, ceramic, construction gypsum, iron, polyethylene and granite.

Amiri said that, with investments from the private sector, the creation of a joint free trade zone between Iran and Azerbaijan would bring a major change in the economic development of the two countries.
