Cargo transportation up in Azerbaijan

Some 69.4 million tons of cargo were transported in Azerbaijan in January-April 2019, which is 2.1 percent more than in the same period last year, Trend reports referring to the State Statistical Committee of Azerbaijan.

In the total volume of goods transported in January-April 2019, 61.2 percent of goods were transported by vehicles, 28.9 percent - by pipelines, 6.7 percent - by railway, 3.1 percent - by ships, and 0.1 percent - by planes.

During the reported period, as many as 628.8 million people used the passenger transport, which is 1.4 percent more than in the same period last year. The majority (87.5 percent) of the passengers used vehicles, 12.1 percent - metro, and the remainder - other types of transport.

In January-April 2019, some 4.7 million tons of cargo were carried and one million passengers were transported by the railways, which is 5.5 and 19.9 percent respectively more than in the same period last year.

On average, the number of loaded railcars amounted to 269 per day and unloaded – to 397 per day. The average daily load of railcars in the northern direction of the railway amounted to 10,400 tons, in the western direction – 4,300 tons, and in the southern direction – 0,600 tons.

About 2.1 million tons of cargo were transported by ships, which is 24.5 percent less than in 2018. Some 24.5 percent of the transported cargo fell on oil cargo. The volume of cargo handled in the ports of Azerbaijan in January-April 2019 amounted to 2.8 million tons.

During the reporting period, approximately 42.5 million tons of cargo were transported by vehicles, which by 2.4 percent exceeds the same figure in 2018 .

The volume of passenger transportation by vehicles amounted to 550 million people (an increase of 1.7 percent compared to 2018). Some 96.1 percent of the passengers were transported by buses and 3.9 percent - by taxi.

The volume of passenger traffic by metro amounted to 77.1 million people, a decrease of 0.9 percent compared to the same period last year.

In January-April 2019, some 663,200 passengers traveled by planes, which is 2.2 percent more than in 2018, and 0.2 percent of the transportation fell on the private sector. Cargo transportation by planes decreased by 4.4 percent compared to the same period last year and amounted to 67,300 tons.
