Iran’s biggest aluminum smelter ready to be commissioned

South Aluminum Corporation (SALCO), Iran’s biggest aluminum smelter, is ready to be commissioned in the Lamerd county of Iran’s Fars province, said Khodadad Gharibpour, deputy minister of industry, mine and trade and chairman of the Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO), Trend reports referring to the IMIDRO website.

Gharibpour noted that the plant will be tested Dec. 18 according to the program and will be put into operation until Dec. 21.

The deputy minister added that the plant is located in the Lamerd Special Economic Zone and port facilities in Hormozgan province can be used for loading and exporting raw materials.

“The plant will have 258 boilers next year (March 21, 2020),” Gharibpour said. “Thus, 300,000 tons of products will be manufactured per year as part of the first phase of the plant.”

A total of $1.2 billion will be spent on the plant and 1,650 people will be employed, the deputy minister noted.

As much as 49 percent of SALCO shares are owned by IMIDRO and the rest by Ghadir Investment Company.
