Azerbaijan expects growth of pomegranate yield

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Nov. 23

By Fidan Babayeva – Trend:

The average yield of pomegranate is expected to increase in Azerbaijan by the end of 2020 compared to 2019, chairman of the Azerbaijan Pomegranate Producers and Exporters Association Farhad Garashov told Trend.

“Pomegranate is still harvested in some districts of the country,” Garashov added. "About 175,000 tons of pomegranate were harvested in Azerbaijan in 2019. Some 170,000 tons of pomegranate were grown in Azerbaijan in 2018 while 9,300 tons were exported."

“The main goal of the association in 2020 is to increase export to the UAE and France, as well as to enter the markets of other European countries with the support of the Azerbaijan Export and Investment Promotion Foundation (AZPROMO),” chairman of the association added.

"Some 18 tons of Azerbaijani pomegranate were exported to France in 2019,” Garashov said. “Interest in our products abroad is growing every year. The association plans to greatly expand the export of pomegranate products to France."

The Azerbaijan Pomegranate Producers and Exporters Association launched its activity in November 2016. The activity of the association turned out to be extremely fruitful in 2019, thus the number of members increased by almost 10 times.

The number of members of the association was 345 people by late 2019 compared 34 in 2018. The association also closely cooperates with international organizations in the sphere of the development of pomegranate growing.
