Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan marks upturn in oil transportation

BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 15. The Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline witnessed a rise in oil transportation, reaching a volume of 27.6 million tons from January through November 2023, Trend reports.

The data from the State Statistics Committee of Azerbaijan reveals that this marks a 1.9 percent increase compared to the same period the previous year, where the volume of oil transportation amounted to 27.1 million tons.

During the reporting period of 2023, the BTC pipeline accounted for 75.9 percent of the total 36.4 million tons of oil transported through Azerbaijan's main oil pipelines. Of this, 22.9 million tons constituted Azerbaijani oil transported via the BTC, representing 82.7 percent of the total volume through this pipeline. Additionally, 17.3 percent (4.8 million tons of oil) originated from Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan. Notably, the volume of transit oil transported via the BTC in the first 11 months of 2022 stood at 4.7 million tons.

BTC pipeline predominantly transports crude oil from the Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli (ACG) fields and condensate from the Shah Deniz field. Furthermore, volumes of oil and condensate from Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan continue to be transported through the BTC.

Shareholders of BTC Co. include bp (30.1 percent), SOCAR (25 percent), MOL (8.9 percent), Equinor (8.71 percent), TPAO (6.53 percent), Eni (5 percent), TotalEnergies (5 percent), ITOCHU (3.4 percent), INPEX (2.5 percent), ExxonMobil (2.5 percent), and ONGC Videsh (2.36%).
