By Huseyn Valiyev – Trend:

Azerbaijan’s National Nuclear Research Center CJSC has started preparing proposals for the construction of a research reactor in Azerbaijan, a source in the company told Trend Oct. 31.

The work in this direction is carried out jointly with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), according to the source.

“Besides that the project is of special importance, it is also costly,” the source noted. “The implementation of the project will depend on whether we will receive state financing or not. Given the current oil prices, it is impossible to expect any progress in the project. Nevertheless, we are preparing proposals and we hope that once they are ready, the necessary funds will appear.”

The contractor, who will be engaged in the construction of the research reactor, will be selected on a tender basis. A 15-hectare land plot in the Gobu settlement of the Absheron district (20 kilometers from Baku) has been allocated for the construction of the research reactor.

Administrative buildings and other infrastructure necessary for scientific research will be located in this area.

The field of nuclear technology is rather specific, and all the activity in this area is carried out directly with the participation of the IAEA, as there are certain regulations, standards and requirements.
