ADB discloses revised schedule for Azerbaijan’s railway project (Exclusive)

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Feb.9

By Leman Zeynalova – Trend:

According to the revised implementation schedule, the project for rehabilitation of the 166km double-track Sumgayit–Yalama rail line in Azerbaijan is expected to be completed during 2023, Candice McDeigan, country director of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for Azerbaijan said in an exclusive interview with Trend.

“ABD’s railway sector development project for the rehabilitation of the 166km double-track Sumgayit–Yalama rail line has been progressing well. Although a delay was incurred in 2020 due to contractor’s mobilization issues caused by the pandemic, the contractor has been able to catch up with the civil works during 2021,” she said.

The country director noted that ADB completed two road projects in 2021 under the Second road Network Development Investment Program.

“Under the first project, a 70.5 km long Ujar-Zardab-Agjabedi Road has been reconstructed connecting the multiple regions of Azerbaijan to the main M2: Baku-Georgian border highway. As a result of reconstruction works, the road was upgraded from category III to category II under the national road design standards,” said McDeigan.

She went on to add that the second project financed the reconstruction of the 57 km section of the M5 road (Yevlakh-Zagatala-Georgian border) and the adjacent R57 road, connecting the M5 to the city of Sheki, as well as the rehabilitation of 10 local roads with about 63 km combined length, providing a convenient connection from many small villages to the R32 and M5/R57 road sections.
