BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 27. Germany significantly contributes to further investments in the renewable energy sector in Tajikistan through contributions to EU funding and funding of multilateral institutions like the World Bank (WB) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), a spokesperson of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany (BMZ) told Trend.
According to the ministry, the ongoing energy projects backed by Germany in Tajikistan include the rehabilitation of a small hydroelectric power station in Tajik town Murghab in the Gorno-Badakhshan region and the construction of a Sebzor small hydroelectric power station.
Undertaken together with the EU, Switzerland, and the World Bank, these projects aim to support Tajikistan in adapting to the impacts of climate change.
Additionally, Germany is involved in ongoing projects in Tajikistan focused on Sustainable Economic Development. These initiatives aim to foster employment and improve income opportunities by supporting specific agricultural value chains and providing training for (re)migrants.
Furthermore, bilateral development cooperation between Germany and Tajikistan extends to the health sector. This collaboration primarily targets maternal and child health, modern family planning, ensuring food security, and combating and preventing infectious diseases, with a particular emphasis on tuberculosis.
Tajikistan and Germany have collaborated for the past 30 years on development cooperation aimed at achieving socially, ecologically, and economically sustainable development in Tajikistan. In 2020, the Federal Government decided to phase out official bilateral development cooperation with select partner countries, including Tajikistan. By 2025, all ongoing bilateral projects between the countries will be concluded.
Nonetheless, the ministry added that Germany will remain committed to supporting Tajikistan through regional development policy initiatives with Central Asia.
