TAPI gas pipeline to be economically viable project for Pakistan – minister

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Oct. 11

By Farida Nuri - Trend:

The Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) pipeline will be an economically viable project for Islamabad since the gas supplied through it will be cheaper than imports of LNG (liquefied natural gas), Pakistani Minister of Oil and Natural Resources Zakir Arshad said, Trends reports citing Business Turkmenistan portal.

According to Arshad, it was not possible to achieve progress on the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline due to US sanctions.

The minister also said that TAPI is an economically profitable project for Pakistan, noting that Pakistan's share in the implementation of TAPI will amount to $200 million out of the total project cost of $10 billion.

The construction of the TAPI gas pipeline with a total length of 1,814 kilometers and a pumping capacity of 30 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year started in December 2015 in the territory of Turkmenistan.

The project was approved by Russia, the US, a number of other countries of the world, as well as international financial institutions, in particular, the Asian Development Bank.
