(IRNA) - Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said here Tuesday that new progress has been made in efforts to resolve the Iran nuclear issue.

Addressing reporters at his weekly press conference, Liu stressed that negotiations to resolve the nuclear standoff would continue.

He did not elaborate on any progress made but was confident that Iran's nuclear case would be settled through diplomatic channels and negotiation.

He advised Iranian officials to refrain from taking moves that would cause further tensions and crises in the region, reports Trend.

He stressed that it was the duty of all sides to find peaceful means to resolve the issue, and gave the assurance that China, as one of the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, would continue its efforts in this respect.

China has repeatedly expressed opposition to the use of sanctions or threats to settle international disputes.
