The fishing season at the Caspian Sea has started in Iran and fishermen from three northern provinces of Guilan, Mazandaran, and Golestan have started their activities.

Director of fishing at Iran’s Fisheries Organization Mokhtar Akhondi said that some 10,000 fishermen are operating in the three provinces, IRIB news agency reported Oct. 8.

The bonefish output lowered by 35 percent due to unfavorable weather in 2015, the lowest amount in 20 years, noted Akhondi.

In 2015, Iranian fishermen caught some 5,520 tons of bonefish from the Caspian Sea.

The Fisheries Organization each year frees 250 to 400 million baby fish in streams pouring into the Caspian Sea as a measure to prevent the extinction of the species.

In 2015, Iranian fishermen caught some 3,000 tons of fish from the Caspian Sea worth 750 billion Iranian rials ($25 million).

The local official expected that this year the volume should rise to 5,000 tons.
