Urmia-Rasht and Mianeh-Tabriz railways will be connected in Iran, Mehr News Agency cited executive director of Iran's Construction and Development of Transportation Infrastructures Company, Kheirollah Khademi, as saying.

He said that the Iranian president will attend the ceremony of commissioning the Maragha-Urmia railway.

The distance from Maragha to Urmia is 183 kilometers, Khademi added.

He said that a part of it was laid and commissioned from Maragha to Mahabad in 2013.

The remaining 98 kilometers will be laid and will be commissioned, he said.

Khademi added that 980 billion rials (about $95.238 million) have been spent to lay the 98-kilometer railway.

The construction of the 970-kilometer-railroad in 2017-2018 is a priority, Khademi added.

He said that it is planned to connect the centers of Kurdistan, Hamadan, Gilan, East Azerbaijan and West Azerbaijan via railways.

There is also the program of connecting the Iran-Afghanistan railway through the Khawaf-Herat. All these projects will be implemented by March 2018, Khademi said.

He added that the Rasht-Qazvin railroad will soon be commissioned.
