Russia has offered assistance to Georgia in taking the remaining citizens out of Syria, Georgian Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili told media today.
The Georgian Foreign Ministry has failed to take 22 Georgian women, engaged in business, out of Damascus for several days. The women were not satisfied with the Foreign Ministry's variant to move through Lebanon and Egypt. They ask to give them the opportunity to move to Turkey.
"Maybe I must not say this, but my special representative Zurab Abashidze and his Russian counterpart had a conversation in which the assistance was offered in taking out women," Prime Minister said.
"Russia is trying to somehow redeem its fault for the situation in 2008," he stressed.
Abashidze and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin had a telephone conversation on September 2.
Large scale military action was launched in South Ossetia on August 8, 2008. Later, Russian troops occupied Tskhinvali and expelled the Georgian military.
Russia recognised the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in late August. In response, Tbilisi ended diplomatic relations with Moscow and has called the two unrecognised republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia occupied territories.
