Jordanian king stresses EU role in advancing peace process

Jordan's King Abdullah II on Sunday urged the European Union to play a greater role in the Middle East peace process, during a meeting with the president of the European Parliament, Jerzy Buzek.

"The monarch underlined the importance of the EU role in surmounting the obstacles that block the achievement of progress towards a solution for the Palestinian-Israeli conflict," a royal court statement said, dpa reported.

King Abdullah also warned that "the continuation of settlement building and other unilateral Israeli measures that target the identity of Jerusalem and holy places there will derail the chances of peace and fuel tension and instability in the region."

Buzek visited Jordan for a plenary session of the Euro-Med Parliamentary Assembly (EBPA) which ended earlier Sunday.
