Iran's Ambassador to Baghdad Hassan Danaeifar said President Jalal Talabani has agreed to release a group of Iranians held in Iraqi prisons.
"Iraq has agreed to free 110 Iranian prisoners," Mehr News Agency quoted him as saying after his meeting with Talabani on Sunday.

"Political, economic and trade cooperation were discussed, and also the issue of the prisoners' release...President Talabani promised his help," the envoy said, Iran daily news reported.

"Iranian prisoners here fall in two categories; one are those imprisoned because of illegal entry, the other involved in drugs," he said without providing details.
The diplomat concurred that Iran has broad-based relations with political parties and groups in the neighboring Arab country.

Danaeifar said on the "historical night that Iraq's parliament was formed, Iraqi leaders had made a major decision and passed a difficult stage".

Last month Iraq's main factions forged a long-awaited agreement to reinstate Nouri Al-Maliki as prime minister and senior Kurdish statesman Talabani as president of the republic.

Former prime minister Iyad Allawi of the Al-Iraqiya alliance -- a former senior Ba'ath official and close ally of ousted dictator Saddam Hussein -- was appointed as head of the newly- established Council of Strategic Policy.

Iraqi lawmakers elected Osama Al-Nujaifi as parliament speaker.

Iraqiya won the most seats in the March parliamentary elections, but failed to secure absolute majority needed to form a government on its own.
