New Arab League chief Nabil al-Arabi travelled to Syria on Wednesday for talks with President Bashar al-Assad on the latest developments in the country, DPA reported.
Al-Arabi, who took the office earlier this month, would also meet with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moalem, sources in the Cairo-based pan-Arab organization said.
Al-Assad has been facing unprecedented protests to his 11-year-old rule since mid-March, with human rights groups saying that around 1,400 Syrians have been killed in a bloody government crackdown.
Al-Arabi's visit is part of a tour that will also take him to Qatar on Thursday, said the sources.
He is due to arrive in Turkey on Friday to attend a meeting of the Libya Contact Group.
