BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 20. Climate change could render the Middle East uninhabitable, say experts from the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) in an article published in Foreign Policy magazine, Trend reports.

The article highlighted the severe heat wave that struck the region this summer and warned of its global repercussions.

The experts noted that in mid-July, temperatures in Dubai soared to 62 degrees Celsius, while the Grand Mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, recorded a temperature of 51 degrees at the end of June. These extreme conditions resulted in over 1,300 fatalities.

Additionally, the World Bank estimates that water shortages could reduce the region's gross domestic product by up to 14 percent by 2050.

A UNICEF report further indicates that Egypt could face a critical water shortage by 2025.
