The Azerbaijani Parliamentary Culture Committee Chairman, Nizami Jafarov, considers surnames without endings more promising.

"It's ironic: today the surnames without endings are widely used, but their number is very little in the official data," Jafarov said.

According to him, the surnames without endings would be the most promising form of the surname when the country will apply new forms.

A special commission created by the Azerbaijani National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) is preparing a concept on the surnames.

According to the 1993 Law on brining names of citizens of Azerbaijan in line with the state language, the citizens can change the end "-ov", "-ev", in their names into "-li", ("-li","-lu" "lu", depending on the root of the word) "-zadeh," "oglu", "-qizi" or completely remove the end.

"Based on the latest approved version, there are four forms of the endings of surnames now: without ending, with the endings "ov" and "ev", the endings "-li", ("-li","-lu" "lu"), the endings "oglu" and "soy" and the endings "gil"," Jafarov said.

He believes that the forms of "soy" and "gil" are experimental and will be used by few people.

"Currently, there are problems with surnames with the ending "zade". Today, 80 percent of names is used with the endings "ov" and "ev", up to 10 percent - "-li", ("-li","-lu" "lu"), the remaining 10 percent - "zade"," Jafarov said.
