Saakashvili says August war aimed to end Georgia's democracy

Georgia's leader Mikheil Saakashvili said Russia planned to give a blow to Georgia's democracy and disrupt hydrocarbons supplies to Europe during the August 2008 conflict.

"The invasion of [Georgia'] territory failed to reach its goals: democracy has not been destroyed and the supplies of oil products from the Caspian region were not stopped," Saakashvili said at the Munich Security Conference on Sunday, RIA Novosti reported.

"The strategic goals were not achieved," he said.

Military actions were launched in the unrecognized republic of South Ossetia in August 2008. Georgian troops entered Tskhinvali, the capital of South Ossetia and later Russian troops occupied the city and drove the Georgian military back to Georgia. Russia recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia on Aug. 26 and established diplomatic relations with them on Sept. 9, 2008. Tbilisi declared them occupied territories and broke off relations with Moscow.
