The relevant agencies began to realize the Azerbaijani President's orders pardoning several prisons on the occasion of Novruz holiday.

For this end, representatives of the media and human rights activists have visited the prisons through the Justice Ministry's Prison Service (PS).

The implementation of the presidential decree will be completed today, Deputy PS Head Huseyn Alikhanov told journalists.

President Ilham Aliyev signed an order to pardon a number of prisons March 17. The President has decided to free 62 prisons from the remaining period of imprisonment. Among them there is editor-in-chief of the Azadlyg newspaper Ganimat Zahid.

The order pardoned seven people sentenced to imprisonment, exempted Iftikhar Mammadov, who was sentenced in 2008 to fines and penalties, from imprisonment, replaced the punishment of Ismayilov Tabriz, sentenced to death in 1997 and commuted to life imprisonment, with 20 years imprisonment.

A woman, serving a sentence of imprisonment which was postponed also was released.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed an order to pardon a number of persons in custody Dec.25, 2009. Order referred to 99 prisoners.

According to 46 pardon orders, signed since 1994, 4,957 people were freed from punishment. 14 of them were signed by Ilham Aliyev and 32 by the late President Heydar Aliyev. Eight acts of amnesty, signed until now, covered 40,000 prisoners.
