Iran preparing to use water reservoir on Araz River on border with Azerbaijan

The Giz Galasi water reservoir on the Aras River on the border with Azerbaijan in Iran’s East Azerbaijan Province can be filled with water by the end of the current Iranian year (March 21, 2021) with the providing of 3.65 trillion rials (about $86.9 million) worth of funds for construction of the reservoir, Executive Director of Regional Water Company of East Azerbaijan Province, Yousef Ghaffarzadeh said, Trend reports citing Ministry of Energy of Iran.

The director emphasized that 625 billion rials (about $14.8 million) worth of funds have been allocated in this regard in recent days.

Ghaffarzadeh added that concreting and other operations are currently being carried out around the reservoir.

According to the director, the Giz Galasi water reservoir is located 12 km east of the Khudafarin hydro junction.

“It is expected to supply water to 12,000 hectares of land through the Giz Galasi reservoir. About, 5,290 hectares of land will be supplied with water in the first stage,“ he said.
