A meeting with Chairman of Britain-Uzbekistan All-Party Parliamentary Group Lord John Waverley, who is on a visit to Tashkent, was held in the Foreign-Policy Committee of the Senate of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan - the Upper House of the Uzbek Parliament on Friday.
According to the National Information Agency of Uzbekistan (UzA), during the meeting it was noted that the relationship between Uzbekistan and the United Kingdom have been developing in many areas, particularly in the field of parliamentarism, and both sides are interested in further expanding and strengthening of cooperation in this regard.
Meetings of the Uzbek-British Trade and Industry Council are held regularly. In 2011, the volume of mutual trade turnover amounted to $177.5 million.
Cultural and humanitarian ties are consistently developing. In particular, Westminster International University in Tashkent, operating since 2002, has become a striking example of effective cooperation in the field of education.
A memorandum of understanding between the Uzbek Oly Majlis Group on cooperation with the Parliament of UK and "Britain-Uzbekistan" All-Party Parliamentary Group, signed in 2010, contributes to further enhancing and strengthening of bilateral relations in the parliamentarism sphere, the dynamic development of political, economic and social partnership.
During the visit to Tashkent Waverley visited the Academy of Public Administration under the President of Uzbekistan, where a documentary film was demonstrated, which was dedicated to the activities of the British Parliament, got familiarized with the activities of the Alisher Navoi National Library of Uzbekistan. He also held talks at the Foreign Ministry of Uzbekistan, where the sides discussed urgent issues of Uzbek-British relations, an important part of which is regular inter-parliamentary contacts.
