One person was killed Saturday in clashes at a major Islamic university in Cairo between Egyptian security forces and students supporting the Muslim Brotherhood, said a health official.

Four others were wounded in the violence that broke out after students torched a building at the Al-Azhar University campus, added Khaled al-Khatib of the Health Ministry, dpa reported.

Police said they had arrested 60 pro-Brotherhood students at the university for allegedly possessing shotguns and petrol bombs to disrupt mid-year examinations, which were to begin Saturday.

Al-Azhar university, a key stronghold of Islamist students, has seen since October frequent clashes between pro-Brotherhood students and security forces.

The Brotherhood's followers have staged almost daily protests since July when the army deposed president Mohammed Morsi, a senior official in the group.

The military-backed government earlier this week declared the Brotherhood a terrorist group.

Under Egyptian law, terrorism-related charges carry the death penalty.

Hundreds have been killed in violence since the army overthrew Morsi, the country's first democratically elected president.
