UN Security Council’s meeting kicks off in New York under Azerbaijani President’s chairmanship

A meeting of the UN Security Council took place at the UN Headquarters in New York under Azerbaijan’s chairmanship. President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev chaired the meeting.

A meeting of the UN Security Council took place at the UN Headquarters in New York under Azerbaijan's chairmanship. President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev chaired the meeting.

Initiated by Azerbaijan, discussions on the topic "Threats created by acts of terrorism to international peace and security" were held in the meeting.

Chairman of the meeting, President Aliyev informed that the present agenda was dedicated to the topic "Threats created by acts of terrorism to international peace and security".

Head of the Azerbaijani state expressed gratitude to the Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon for participation in the session.

The Secretary General of the United Nations congratulated President Aliyev on presidency of Azerbaijan in Security Council. He noted importance of development of the general concept in combat against terror.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany Guido Westerwelle, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Togo Elliot Ohin, member of Obama administration, the US permanent representative to UN Susan Rice, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Morocco Jusuf Amrani, the special representative of the President of Russia on fight against terrorism and the organized crime Alexander Zmeevsky, the deputy minister of multilateral affairs of Colombia Patti Londono, representatives of China, Pakistan, Great Britain, India, the Republic of South Africa, Guatemala, France and Portugal congratulated the President of Azerbaijan on the occasion of presidency in Security Council, underlining that now the terrorism is the biggest threat for the world, and declared their support for United Nations' efforts in struggle in this area.

President Aliyev made a speech at the meeting.

Azerbaijan was elected as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2012-2013, gaining 155 votes from member countries in a tough membership competition.
