BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 16. The conference “Water and Gender Equality” has been held under the joint organization of the State Committee for Family, Women, and Children Affairs of Azerbaijan, the State Water Resources Agency, and ADA University on the occasion of COP29, Trend reports.
According to the information, the conference included a panel session with the participation of representatives of state structures, international organizations, members of the Azerbaijani Parliament, public representatives, and students.
The panel session discussed the impact of climate change on women's lives, their role in the protection and management of water resources, motivation to choose specialties in this field, as well as ensuring gender balance in staff appointments.
The Chairperson of the State Committee for Family, Women, and Children Affairs of Azerbaijan Bahar Muradova said that water conservation is universal concern, not just limited to women.
Muradova highlighted that access to clean water in Azerbaijan has not yet reached the desired level.
"Historically, women have played a key role in water conservation, but the current times demand new conditions. Water conservation is a task that involves everyone, not just women. At the same time, women's participation in decision-making regarding water resource management can lead to positive outcomes. However, professional skills and training are essential for this. COP29 will provide us with the opportunity to find solutions to this problem. Such events are beneficial not only for Azerbaijan but for all of humanity," she added.
The Chairman of the State Water Resources Agency of Azerbaijan Zaur Mikayilov noted that Azerbaijan is taking significant steps to enhance access to clean water.
Mikayilov emphasized that the issue of access to clean water is pressing worldwide.
"This problem particularly affects women. However, effective water management is a task for everyone, not just women. We aim to eliminate this inequality. A series of initiatives are underway in Azerbaijan to improve access to clean water," he noted.
He added that the issue of water supply is a crucial public priority.
"Women, who traditionally play a leading role in managing water resources at home, are increasingly participating in decision-making at the state level. Our goal is to ensure equal access to water resources for all citizens," Mikayilov added.
