Kazakhstan's e-commerce market flourishes with 12.5% share in 2022

BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 27. The volume of the retail e-commerce market reached 1.9 trillion Kazakh tenge (including marketplace transactions) in Kazakhstan in 2022, Trend reports.

According to the country's Bureau of National Statistics, out of this, marketplace sales accounted for 56.9 percent, while retail enterprises conducting online sales through their own websites represented 43.1 percent. E-commerce's share in retail trade, excluding marketplaces, stood at 5.4 percent in 2022, while a year earlier this figure was 3.6 percent.

The majority of goods and services, accounting for 93 percent of the total volume, were traded through marketplaces operated by small businesses with fewer than 100 employees. In contrast, only 7 percent were attributed to medium-sized enterprises.

Among the retail trade conducted through proprietary internet resources, the most prominent categories were household products (34.7 percent), clothing, footwear, and sporting goods (17.3 percent), food products (13.2 percent), cosmetics (6.5 percent), and pharmaceuticals (4.8 percent).

The report is based on a newly developed methodology in partnership with the Asian Development Bank. It encompasses data from over 46 sectors of e-commerce and 40 aggregators, providing valuable insights into the industry.
