Gianluigi Buffon has been named as the goalkeeper of the year at FIFA's The Best awards on Tuesday, Dailymail reported.

The legendary Italian stopper picked up the prize having been named on a final shortlist of three alongside Real Madrid's Keylor Navas and Bayern Munich's Manuel Neuer.

'It's a great honour to receive this award at my age. I'm proud of it but I want to say thanks to my club, my coach and team-mates because they help me to make it possible,' Buffon said.

'I want to say thanks to all the people who voted for me and I think the last year has been a fantastic season for Juventus but it wasn't enough to win in Europe.

'For this year I hope we can play better and with a national team and Juventus because I would like to finish with a victory.'

Buffon helped Juventus win a historic sixth straight Serie A title last season but couldn't guide his side to Champions League final success against Real Madrid in Cardiff back in June.

The Italy international has claimed he will retire at the age of 40 after next summer's World Cup finals in Russia - should Italy advance past Sweden in a play-off next month.

The goalkeeper of the year award is a new addition to FIFA's The Best awards and its panel of voters included Schmeichel as well as former international goalkeepers including Rene Higuita, Vitor Baia and Jorge Campos.
