The Israeli police incursions into the Muslim Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem could lead to undesirable consequences, the Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, said.

Ihsanoglu condemned the raiding by Israeli Special Forces of Al-Aqsa Mosque on the morning of Sunday 21st October 2009 emphasizing that attacking Al-Aqsa Mosque is tantamount to a blatant attack against Islamic sacred sites and sanctities, the OIC reported.

On Oct. 21, the Israeli police used force to disperse the Arab demonstrations on the Temple Mount in the historical center of Jerusalem.

The Arab demonstrators threw stones at law enforcement officers, RIA Novosti wrote with reference to police officer.

The police dispersed the crowd and arrested 12 people with the help of stun grenades. The Palestinian media reported that there were at least eight injured.

The Temple Mount venerated by both Muslims and Jews is temporarily closed to visitors - tourists and pilgrims. In ancient times the Jewish temple stood here, but currently the Muslim Al-Aqsa Mosque and Dome of the Rock Al-Sahra located here, RIA Novosti reported.

In recent weeks, the Temple Mount became the scene of repeated clashes between the Jews and the Arabs.

"The intensification of Israeli aggressions against Islamic sanctities in the holy city of Al-Qods entails an earnest and firm stand by the Ummah [nation] to defend its holy sites," Ihsanoglu

Ihsanoglu appealed to the international community to compel Israel to comply with international law and put an end to its attacks on holy sites.

The Secretary General cautioned that any act likely to damage Al-Aqsa Mosque or any other holy places would bear grave consequences amid both Muslims and other believers across the world with unpredictable ramifications for international peace and security.
