A census of population will be carried out in Georgia. The National Statistics Agency has already begun preparations and all the work is supervised by a special commission under the leadership of Prime Minister Nika Gilauri.
The commission will discuss preparations for the census and its date in the next few days.
A census of the Georgian population is carried out once every 10 years. The last time it was carried out was in 2002. Then the population of the republic, but excluding Abkhazia and South Ossetia where it was not carried out, hit 4,371,535 residents. According to official statistics, as of Jan.1, 2011, 4,469,200 people lived in Georgia, excluding residents of Abkhazia and South Ossetia which declared its independence.
