. Ambassador to Georgia John Bass regards opening of the Upper Lars checkpoint on the Georgia-Russia border as a positive step.

He said it is a positive step in relations between peoples and economic advancement of the inhabitants of the region.

The Kazbegi and Upper Lars checkpoints began to work March 1 after a four-year interruption. But the transportation of goods through the Russian-Georgian border is limited and the subject in under negotiation. The goods mainly transported from the border to Armenia

"The opening of the border crossing is a positive step, which serves as a stabilization not only in Georgia but also in the region" Bass told journalists and stressed that the U.S. will continue its support to Georgia.
