Grain Production Rises in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku, 17 October / Trend corr. S.Babayeva / In October amount of grain harvest, except maize, made up 2.3mln tons from 860,900 h of sowing area in Azerbaijan as compared to 1.8mln tons from 703,700 h of sowing area in the same period of 2007, the State Committee for Statistics said.

Productivity averagely amounted to 27.1 metric centers per one hectare.

Although harvest of grain ends in regions, harvest of maize is still going on. Production of maize reached 146,300 tons from 30,500 h of sowing area.

Harvest of grain and grain-legumes together with maize rose by 491,200 tons or 24.7% and reached 2.5mln tons in Azerbaijan.

Earlier Ismat Abbasov, the Azerbaijani Minister of Agriculture, forecasted a record indicator for grain production, which will cover 80%-85% of needs of the country in the product.

Annual need in food grain makes up about 1.6mln tons.
