A unified world currency is a way out of the global financial crisis, Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev said at the opening ceremony of the Eurasian Economic Security in the Global Risk System forum in Astana.
"A unified currency is one way to help the global economy recover," Nazarbayev said.
The currency could be named "euras" or "Eurasia" instead of "altin," he said.
Nazarbayev proposed establishing a working group to design a strategy to launch the currency.
"We are ready to provide all necessary conditions for the working group in Astana," he said. "My idea about a unified world currency may sound overzealous and vague, but I learned during my meeting with senior world experts that we share the same opinion."
At the end of his speech, the president proposed holding the next Astana forum on July 2010.
"We can work on ideas proposed at the forum this year," he said.
