Iran expects to harvest 3.3M tons of wheat this year

Iran expects to harvest 3.3 million tons of wheat this year (started March 21, 2019), said Faramak Aziz Karimi, director general of the Cereal Supply Organization of the Iranian Ministry of Agriculture Jihad, Trend reports with reference to the website of Iran’s Ministry of Agriculture Jihad.

He said that wheat is annually sown at an average of 600,000-700,000 hectares of irrigated land and 900,000-1,000,000 hectares of dry land in Iran.

He added that 3.5 tons of wheat per hectare is harvested from irrigated lands, and 1.2 tons of wheat per hectare is harvested from dry lands.

“Last Iranian year (started March 21, 2018) professional farmers harvested 12-14 tons of wheat per hectare,” he said.

Noting that last Iranian year, about 33,000 tons of wheat was grown, the ministry official said that this Iranian year, 50,000 tons of wheat are expected to be grown.

“Most of the wheat varieties sown in Iran are local,” he added. “There are also a number of different types. Last year, seeds from such countries as France and Hungary were imported and handed over to farmers.”
