Turkmenistan studying possibility of nominating its candidacy to UNESCO structures

BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 6

By Jeila Aliyeva - Trend:

Turkmenistan is studying the possibility of nominating its candidates for a number of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) structures, UNESCO told Trend.

The report says that currently, the UNESCO Secretariat has registered a nomination for inclusion in the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage "Crafts for making Dutar, performing musical art of playing it and the art of Bakhshi". A decision on this issue will be made at the end of 2021.

"Turkmenistan is currently studying in detail the issue of joining a number of its cities to the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN), which is designed to further strengthen intercultural dialogue," UNESCO added.

Despite the current difficult international situation related to the COVID-19 pandemic, Turkmenistan and UNESCO continue to actively cooperate with each other and most of the events are held online.

The report says that one of the promising areas of cooperation is the preservation of the spiritual heritage of the Turkmen people. The UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, ratified by Turkmenistan in 2011, is a working tool in this area.

In addition, Turkmenistan plans to include a number of secondary schools in the country in the International Network of UNESCO Associated Schools, which has existed since 1953 and which unites 7,500 schools in 174 countries.

This will contribute to the development of relations between educational institutions of Turkmenistan and their foreign counterparts, as well as provide significant assistance in organizing the exchange of experience.
