Turkmenistan has become the largest liquefied natural gas producer in Central Asia in recent years, the Turkmen Dovlet Habarlary state news agency reported.

"In accordance with the domestic fuel and energy complex development program, the amount of petrochemical and gas processing products demanded by foreign consumers is estimated to increase to 3 million tons," the agency reported.

Several large investment projects have launched, including the construction of petrochemical plants and gas-processing complexes and the modernization of the Kiyanly Seaport. A terminal for storing and shippiing liquefied natural gas was also put into operation in Kiyanly in 2009, with a capacity of 200,000 tons per year.

Products produced at the oil refinery in Turkmenbashi are now transported via pipelines to the sea berth whose platforms can receive gas tankers with a capacity of 3,000 tons.
