Oxford Institute for Energy Research names ways to improve oil, gas sector in Turkmenistan

BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 26

By Jeila Aliyeva - Trend:

To improve its oil and gas sector Turkmenistan must see some progress on projects such as TAPI, build and utilize more capacity to China, re-examining a Trans Caspian option, and others, the representative of Oxford Institute for Energy Studies (OIES) Julian Bowden told Trend.

“Indeed, Turkmenistan has made and is making efforts to achieve export diversity, through projects such as TAPI and domestic petrochemicals,” he noted.

Bowden pointed out that maybe it should look more at the immediate regional gas marketing opportunities in its Central Asian neighbors, together with Trans Caspian.

“Of course, TAPI would be an additional component in the gas export portfolio. However, several things need to be recognized,” he said.

He also said that mitigation of COVID-19 is very hard, and ultimately no-one can be immune. However, having a broad portfolio of export options is essential, he said, adding that TAPI would be an additional component in the gas export portfolio.

However, several things need to be recognized: “Globally, the gas market is much more competitive than 10 years ago when TAPI was being designed. India and Pakistan now both have liquefied natural gas supply,” he concluded.
